How to Make Perfect Caramelized Onions

  • 3 large white onions peeled and sliced into half moons
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • pinch of salt and pepper


  1. Heat a pan to medium low heat, then add the canola oil and butter.
  2. When the butter is melted, add the sliced onions, and season them with salt and pepper.
  3. Toss them around thoroughly in the butter and oil.
  4. Cook the onions over low heat, stirring every 5-7 minutes.
  5. After about 45 minutes, you'll have exactly what you're looking for: deeply golden, sugary sweet, caramelized onions.
  6. Store in an airtight container for up to a week in the refrigerator.
