Puerto Rican Salami, Guava and Cheese Appetizers (Entremeses Tipicos)

When I think of Puerto Rican food, it’s always simple , but utterly delicious. A perfect example is this Puerto Rican Salami, Guava and Cheese Appetizer. This dish is an example of entremeses tipico (typical hors d’oeuvres) that are commonly featured at Puerto Rican gatherings.

My dad is the designated appetizer assembler in our family, and this recipe is one of his signature dishes. Sometimes, he’d get super fancy and put a sliced pimento stuffed olive on top of the guava. But more often than not, the salami, cheese and guava paste trifecta was the star of the show. I can’t decide which is my favorite flavor, because they’re so perfectly balanced when you combine them!

The combination of guava and cheese is actually very common in Latin American countries like Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Colombia. We’re all about the sweet and salty stuff! Now, I’ll admit this isn’t really a recipe, as much as it is an assembly of various ingredients, stacked on top of a crunchy butter cracker. This makes it a super fast and easy appetizer to put together last minute! This is why I love keeping a package of Margherita® Genoa Salami in my fridge at all times. It’s perfect for snacking, entertaining, and incorporating into everyday recipes!
